This statement is your evidence, Dave? He mentions nukes as well and is clearly already deranged. This is what you want to base taking away one of a free people's fundamental rights on? Remember, the boys in Oklahoma used manure to kill 168.
I'll roll the dice on these tragedies being the sad byproduct of a decadent and diverse society but they are a infinitesimally small price to pay when you consider the risks associated with your alternative.

I find it a bit disconcerting when people speak of our "decadent" society, this self-loathing, unjustified?, though we need to view these barbaric acts on an individual basis, each with its own set of malignancies. it's not fair or just to sit there and say we need to ban something completely, it's not going to happen, there are as many guns in this world as there are ant colonies, it is a double-edged sword, you cannot deny the existence of firearms, nor their place in history, and as I said before they are not play toys, and they don't need to be in everybody's hands, that is something our society needs to protect against. we have children who can barely read and write, yet, probably own a multitude of these kinds of weapons, encouraged by overzealous parents, these are atrocities that we need to guard against, it should not be that easy to obtain these weapons, and when the state issues them to people, there needs to be some sort of accountability as to where these weapons are and how they are being used and handled, a constant accounting. you will never succeed in banning the deranged, hopefully our psychologies can keep them in check.

who said anything about "banning" guns completely? well, not me at least. and this seems to be where the whole argument wanders off into never-never land, and never gets anywhere ...

how does any discourse over firearms wander??? Any open-discussion is beneficial. Who mentioned your name in this discussion? did I implicitly use your name? the majority of people in regular society do not need assault rifles. and most people can't shoot straight with them. leave them in the hands of police and the military WHERE THEY BELONG

that's the crux of the biscuit though there are shades of interpretation between the opinion we both share. i think we already live under oppression - economic oppression that is becoming increasingly more repressive. do you really believe that our guns save us from being oppressed? i wish it were so. a people can be oppressed by indoctrination - an indoctrination carried out in the schools, media, and workplace to the point where the people will accept oppression as something other than what it is - they will even use their guns to protect that oppression.

Well there is elite oppression and base oppression. You are talking about the elite type. Yaknow where most have their bellies full, Wifi, smartphones, are maxed out on their credit cards but drive hot cars and have the latest name brand tennis shoes plus access to the best education, some of the best health care and entertainment 24/7...but...I admit, are unwitting dupes of a broken, corrupted system.
Of course you've got about 5 billion people worldwide who would gladly trade you their form of oppression for ours. Poor babies I really feel sorry for everyone in America.
I'm talking about the base form and take the long view, as our forefathers did.
(btw- That's not to say I condone the other. Just sayin')
