Losing Mamie

The way we'll remember her, curled up
on our pastel bedcover: perky tabby
who once sailed out of our third floor
window and landed in the flowerbed
below, returned to us by a passerby.
She remained rambunctious until near
the last, when a brain lesion disabled her
front legs: tragic toll on a sweet soul;
you cradled her in your shoulder
as I drove through Baltimore
snow flurries to the waiting vet's
tender euthanizing injection.

sorry to hear about your loss. i love cats and value their friendship every bit as much as the friendships within our own species.

i have yet to face this scene personally; it's always been something.  my last pet cheena, the leaping wonder cat, was adopted by a good friend before i went off on a long, long wander through the sage...  heartbreaking stuff, for sure.

Thank you, everyone.  Yes it is hard and heartbreaking to lose an animal that has become part of your life for so many years. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I had a similar experience with a cat I grew up with and can relate.  I love cats and their acrobatics.  Sometimes you see them getting ready to do something crazy, and you know you can stop them, but you want to just sit and watch to see how it turns out.  And they always end up landing on their feet somehow.  Anyway, nice poem, brought back some good memories.

Sorry to hear. I'm not a pet person, but I hear for some it's sometimes worst than losing a friend. So my sympathies.
