I read
but still there’s

something I’m missing
I don’t get it
I’m not comprehending

hidden messages
innuendo
veiled comparisons

twists of meaning
metaphors
layer upon layer

rambling allusions
similes
dancing around

I don’t get the message
too often
don’t see the big picture

when it’s all said and done
I don’t get it
what are you saying?

but still
I read

I'm sure you are like a lot of us, I know I miss a ton.  Part I blame on my lack of formal education (both poetic and general) and part, I think, is sloppy writers who just vomit their brains on a page and think themselves artists.  Interestingly, who's to say they are not.   Everything in poetry is so subjective.

as with all forms of artistic expression, once it is released to the public, it's fair game, and critics spend inordinate amounts of time trying to be the guy that knows definitively what the artist meant...what a crock.....sometimes the artist doesn't know.....I love the mystery myself.....with others work, as well as my own......occasionally I'll reread a poem I wrote five years ago, and for the first time get where it came from.....

what's cool, is we seem to be constantly assimilating this collective consciousness, from people compelled to express themselves, which oddly turns out to be the only ones that matter, 'cause if you live a life of playing it close to the vest, you're going to die with those thoughts ( not sure if they rise from the grave, float in the stratosphere, and fall in someones ear one day while they're lying on beach )

from my perspective, I don't want everything to to clear....if it were all cut and dried, I go nuts.........

@saw ... huh???

Just kidding. Sometimes just the flow and sound of the words is enough for me to like a poem.

Is it impolite to ask? what does that mean or where are you coming from?

Well done! There is much in poetry that I overlook or don't understand. If 10 people read a poem...you may get 10 different understandings.
