Inmate A to 4 point control- where are his g d meds?!? Station 4, Christ stumbles, falls to the road. Inmate B, gay in Iowa, very young-"red light over my head"; Can we wash Jesus' hair after he's dead? Inmate C looks "most female, call me 'Countess",but the guard Says, "Disciplinary detention"- Jesus' dying is hard. Inmate D, 2 lifes and change- "dad chokin on mom... My little bother and I"... he can't remain calm.. Christ borne down from the cross and his beautiful hair Is all matted, but Mary his mother is there. Inmate A can go back to his seg cell, we assume No longer a danger- and so Christ to the tomb.

A unique poignant piece, Dave. The last couplet, nice ending. I used to visit the prison in high school, had access to the whole place, lunch with the inmates in pre-release. My guardian left once to take a call, and a nice man came up, sat down, ate a bit, we talked, and later I learned he was a lifer for killing his wife, seven children. Nice guy. Who would have known? I finished the Inferno a few months ago, for some reason the Hell in your piece made me think of it. Enjoyed.

thank u bardmster-i can hear the schizophrenic screaming in her cell in the back ward as we speak-the pain of mental disease-please give em meds
maybe the guy at iowa just wanted some attention-he screams that he enjoys the pain- i can't believe it
does he enjoy being strapped to the table- electrocution style? can he relax?
i can see the obsessive compulsive who can't drive under bridges- the pain of driving around
the mental pain almost worse than death- a "death in life" altho- he/she comes out of it- we feel sorry for him- her
NAMI a good organization

the penal system is barbaric, and that's without taking into consideration all the innocent people that had to stay there for twenty years until DNA released them.....I saw a guy named Bo Lazoff at the Friends, Stony Run Meeting House one evening that has spent a lot of time working with prisoners.....an inspirational character....he has a program called the Prison-Ashram Project......it's worth checking out dave.....just google his Human Kindness Foundation....i spoke with him after his talk...he plays guitar and sings as well... His book, We Are All Doing Time , is exceptional.........intense work, dave.....creative and sharp....

The mentally ill, course not easily defined, should not be put in with the regular hard core population. I learned of this first happening about 30 years ago, and now it's here in full force. There are sick people, and there are bad people, a difference. Much sadness in this piece.

and as far as keeping the young ones separate from the older ones? so they aren't getting bad influences? the older guys at the jail tell me they REALLY fear the young "hoppers"-who's a worse influence on whom?
as far as the mental cases at the jail? o they're around
but when they do a program like MSNBC's "Lock up- Iowa State"- they really go for the gusto to find the hannibal lector and other super psike "types"
i guess in md- these folks are mainly at Patuxent- or- we don't have so many becuase we are not that repressed of a state- that wacky of a state?
my son is a schizophrenic and i've had my difficulties- and yet- strangely- for me- i'm almost proud of mine- my ocd and depression- i've sort of aged out of it- altho i still have my addictions (secret- dino- very secret)
i do believe it's inherited
my ocd- as annoying and scary as it was- helped me focus- my depression - which was clinical- just seemed to b something i had to go thru- same as wm styron- i met him once
now- there was a writer
the sexual deviant who is violent- that- to puritan america- is the scariest of all- mr. dolarhyde (sp) of "The Red Dragon" (who tore a Blake engraving off the wall at the Brooklyn Museum and ate it!! of the guy in "Silence of the Lambs"
to me- sort of like John Waters (who is on the Board of Prisoners' Aid) , i really think i can understand some one like that- or dahmer or gacy- deeno- watch out- where is it u live bardmaster?
take gacy- when he first experiences sex- it is w great shame- his parents beat him perhaps- or, he is caught, and from then on gets pleasure from sex AND inflicting pain even murder- or, he is so ashamed of his act he must erase the victim- he blames the victim
a guy like bundy wants total control- even to the point of loving a still body- very still- his murders are sexually based-
all any of these guys need is some good therapy- they are not evil- they have their motives

i find the richard speck case rather disturbing and indicative . i agree with your view that it's not really a question of evil, but rather one of mental illness and social illness. there is no real attempt to use these institutions therapeutically. in speck's case they indulged him; the authorities allowed him to indulge his fantasies and party it up. i guess it's cheaper for the system to just maintain and perpetuate rather than rehabilitate and treat. it's a systemic problem that cuts across the board. you can't fix a penal system that is an appendage of a larger systemic problem - they are inextricably connected. i'd write more, but the cartoon spider riders just came on!

That's right- you were just on the edge of a momentous solution- and you had to go watch tv.
But what you say, I say- socialism wld do better- and people tell me- well- what about Cuba or the USSR?- and then I respond- they aren't/were'nt socialism. The revolutions are betrayed- as Trotsky wrote.
The ideals morph into a Stalin, a Castro, a Quadaffy; the US system is good in that it has checks and balances- but, guess what- a right wing court checks a dumb ass congress checks a feeble, half assed president, etc. etc. etc.
Maybe we need to have smarter pols- but how?
I do think everyone should b requird to vote- they are in Australia- but then- why can't we have candidates like Ralph Nader? Who would they vote for?
Go back to yr. cartoons.
Has socialism really been tried? Some countries come closer than others.
