Too Close For Comfort

an asteroid zinged by quietly
that even the dog didn't notice
Monday's walk was uneventful
though a chilled breeze did plummet me
it was nothing unusual though
carried on like all the other limited moments
in this life measured so carefully exact
the bank balances either here or there
illnesses measured in parts per wellness
economies floated upon invisible meteors
there's something about things that just pass
the lives you failed to grasp and hug
people who just need a little help
the migrant who escapes the bullet
prays the drugs pass by his children
the home he can only witness from afar
education his worn hands will never grasp
a nation wanting only his labor
then hope he's buried in some other ground
these flybys speak volumes about the world
shoot by unannounced only a hair's length away
remind how limited this world is and how little

even the dog didn't notice - that is so wild! there is some confusing syntax in the drugs don't pass by his children line. it is a little indistinct and could be taken in opposite ways. the hammer can fall at any time - as the asteroid incident illustrates. good message in this, mike.

thank you gentlemen. nobody seems to want to talk about it in the media. a Harvard astrophysicist today, said that only a handful of amateur stargazers picked up on it. the ramifications if it impacted, could have been enormous. INDEED!

WOW, you mean all my problems could have been solved, shit I've got to pay closer attention.  Maybe if we all leaned to the right in unison we could have put ourselves in its path...errr...or is that just me.  Like the analogy to migrant workers Mike.

i forgot to mention the scientist said it happens more frequently than we'd like to believe, about every five years or so, and impacts occur once every century. i guess that means we're due. he said that only a small amount of stargazers, a number you could fit in a McDonald's picked up on this. the big boys didn't even know. so much for our tax dollars. let's hire on a few more amateurs. geeez! last rites anyone?

what if it only grazes you like a hunter's rotten shot? what if it takes out everything around you, and somehow you survive with a cooked ass? would you want to be in a burn clinic for a long time? these boulders are capable of knocking out 800 square miles. that's serious real estate if it's inhabited. check out NASA's, "Near Earth Object Program", cool information there.

Nice work, Mike.  The poem really takes off and begins to soar here:

there's something about things that just pass
the lives you failed to grasp and hug
people who just need a little help
the migrant who escapes the bullet. . .

I wonder though if you mean "prays the drugs pass by his children" rather than "don't pass by his children"?

All the best

Chris
